The “Get Organized” Season is in full swing! I talked with several clients and potential clients last week who are feeling the ‘Urge to Purge’ now that their kids are back in school and there’s time to get a major project completed before the holidays arrive. Are you feeling it too? I thought you might be interested in a design project I finished last month--maybe you have this situation in your home, too. I had the opportunity to work with Madison Property Management, designing a Model Studio Apartment for their brand new Galaxie Luxury Apartments on the east side of Madison with gorgeous views of the Capitol and the lakes! This space was an exciting challenge--larger than most 1 or 2 bedroom apartments in square footage but ALL ONE BIG ROOM. The project involved using furniture that MPM already had in storage, adding a few pieces and arranging things so this huge ‘dance hall’ of a room felt like living space. A place where a person could sleep, relax, get some work done, eat and entertain. So, we got creative :) We used a very cool cardboard system to build a wall for a little bedroom--yep, there’s a bed and dresser back there! Because NO ONE sleeps well out in the middle of a huge room with lots of windows--sleep’s important (!) and to sleep well, you need to feel safe, secure and cozy. Next, we used a big rug and furniture arrangement to create a living room. The rug defines the space and the back of the chair suggests the end of the living room. The TV is across from the sofa offering a place to relax and/or entertain. The desk occupies the far corner of the space--a little out of the way for concentration but still with the ability to see out the windows--there will be a GARDEN out on the terrace next year! The hanging light defines the space for the dining area. The table and chairs are directly under the light and the kitchen is just around the corner. Remember this is a model unit, no one is actually LIVING there! However, it suggests living spaces and by using furniture arrangement, rugs, lighting and cardboard :) we were able to give potential residents an idea of how they might use this space to live. Could these principles of furniture arrangement, rug and lighting placement also help you think about your space--especially if you have BIG living spaces--in a new way? If so, I would LOVE to hear from you! Next Wednesday, September 28, is a BIG day for us at Jane Antonovich Designs!
