I’ve been hearing the ads for the kick-off to shopping season rev up in the last few weeks but the marketers (<3 you, Kerstin, Barry) REALLY got my attention the other day with this: “It’s Thanks-GETTING Season”! Yes, the holidays are upon us and buying gifts is part of the tradition. I would like to throw a little MINDFUL SHOPPING into the mix--I just can’t help it! If you’re going out to GET STUFF this week consider these tips: First of all, be careful, it’s CRAZY out there...I don’t want you getting trampled! Support your local economy. Purchase thoughtfully from local businesses. Bonus: Decrease the resources spent on transportation and save the planet. Consider consumables. Something that can be eaten, used up, enjoyed, read. Especially if the gift is homemade or includes chocolate--how sweet! Give experiences. Tickets, Dance lessons, A massage. You can’t go wrong there! Buy nothing and donate the money. I am passionate about my former student, Eli Pollock’s non-profit, Travel to Learn. Check it out and join me in donating if you’re inspired. Give your time. Volunteer for your favorite charity or block off an afternoon for a friend or relative, Enjoy each other’s company, ice-skate, go to Pilates, or hang out on the couch with a cup of tea... Ask the recipient. I know, not a surprise, but this could lead to a gift that will do more than just add to the clutter heap. And, remember the kid that plays with the box instead of the toy. Take a deep breath and gift from the heart, you can’t go wrong with that. Let’s do a little clutter-prevention this holiday season I heard the advertisement say, “You need a little something special for yourself, too!” (I think he was talking about electronics…) Do you? Here’s to a Tasty Thanksgiving and possibly a little less clutter and chaos for all of us, Lots of love, XO Jane PHOTO CREDIT: www.wiringbrains.com
